A Home Away from Home: The Freeman Family’s Stay at RMHC

Told by Melanie & Trey – Cyrus’ Parents

We are the Freeman Family. Our son was born at Roanoke Memorial Hospital on June 28th at 38 weeks and 5 days. He was born with a neural tube defect called Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele and rocker bottom feet which is also known as vertical talus. He also has Chiari Malformation Type II and was in the NICU for 20 days. He had surgery for his defect on his back at 2 days old. We were fortunate enough to be able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House for the full extent of his stay and for a second time during his second surgery for his feet in October of 2023. We lived most of our days and evenings in the NICU with him, but we were so grateful to have somewhere to stay at night and somewhere to call “home” for those 20 days. We had no idea how long his stay would be or what other surgeries our boy would have to go through. We still have a long road ahead but have come so far since June of 2023! Thank you to the staff, volunteers, and anyone involved in keeping the Ronald McDonald House up and running for families like us. We are so grateful for somewhere that welcomes us and is in close proximity to the hospital. ❤️
